Stay Safe during Summer Power Outages

Learn about how to keep your food safe during a summer power outage. Power outages can last a few hours to several days. They may come on suddenly. If the power outage is less than two hours long, food in the refrigerator and freezer should be OK. Do not open the refrigerator or freezer. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold enough for a few hours, at least. A freezer that is half full will hold for up to 24 hours and a full freezer for 48 hours.
