ATTENTION OTSEGO COUNTY FARMERS!
Did you know that there are lots of programs designed to help you protect your farm from development?
The Otsego County Planning Department works with the Otsego Land Trust and the American Farmland Trust on NYS Farmland Protection Implementation Grants.
The the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the USDA Farm Service Agency have other farmland protection options designed to protect local farmland funded through the USDA Farm Bill.
NYS FARMLAND PROTECTION IMPLEMENTATION GRANTS
Every year New York State awards up to $35 million in grants to purchase development rights (PDR) from farms, while farmers retain ownership of their property.
Each year, the Otsego County Planning Department, along with the Otsego Land Trust and the American Farmland Trust, selects one or two farms for the NYS grant application.
The process begins when the Otsego Land Trust and the Otsego County Planning Department invite farmers to attend pre-application workshops in the spring. Interested farmers submit a pre-application to the Planning Department for consideration. From the pre-applications, one or two farms that are competitive on a state level are selected. The Planning Department and the Otsego Land Trust then begins the process of developing a full state application, which is submitted to the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets in the fall.
