K-9 Ricky is the newest member of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office. Ricky was donated by a breeder in Albany, NY for police service.
Ricky was assigned to Deputy Keith Sheldon in July 2012 and his primary use will be for Narcotics Detection, Handler Protection and Tracking. The team graduated from the New York State Police Canine Academy in Cooperstown, NY. in December, 2012.
While at the Academy Deputy Sheldon and Ricky underwent a strenuous program during which the team was instructed in: basic obedience, agility, handler protection, detection, tracking, and building searches. The team passed all aspects of the training before becoming a certified K-9 team.
Ricky’s namesake is Investigator Ricky A. Yerdon who passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2008. Investigator Yerdon was a District Attorney/DSS Fraud Investigator for Otsego County at the time of his death. Prior to working in the District Attorney's Office, Investigator Yerdon was a Correctional Officer and then a Deputy Sheriff for the Otsego County Sheriff's Office. Investigator Ricky Yerdon served the residents of Otsego County in an exemplary manner over his 25 year career.
