Sheriff Richard J. Devlin, Jr.

Sheriff Devlin being sworn into office by County Court Judge Brian Burns on January 1, 2007.

County Fair Parade 2008

Dear Otsego County Residents,

It is my honor and privilege to serve as your Sheriff since the retirement of Sheriff Donald R. Mundy, Sr. in 2006.

My wife Laurie and I have been married 26 years and live in the Village of Milford with 2 of our 3 children Kimberly and Ros. Kimberly is attending SUNY Oneonta majoring in buisness economics and Ros is a Correctional Officer. My oldest child Rich lives in Louisiana where he has begun his own law enforcement career.

I have been involved with the Boy Scouts, Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad for over 29 years and served as the Milford Fire Chief for 10 years.

With over 23 years of law enforcement experience, I began my career right after high school serving in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps in Hanua, West Germany. Upon arriving home with an honorable discharge from the Army, I began work in the private security industry until I was offered a position with the City of Oneonta Police Department in 1988. I served 4 years with the City of Oneonta Police Department, but being community and county oriented with the fire service, I wanted to expand my capabilities of serving the public.

In 1992, the late Sheriff Martin Ralph and then Undersheriff Donald Mundy hired me as a Deputy Sheriff.  I was promoted by Sheriff Mundy to Investigator in 1999 serving in that capacity for 18 months, then promoted to Sergeant in 2000 and held that position for seven years. As Sgt. I was in charge of our criminal division and road patrol overseeing all criminal investigations, daily operations, scheduling and administrative duties.

Since becoming Sheriff I have continued the search for outside funding to lessen the burden on our residents. I have secured funding for projects such as Operation Safe Child, Offender Watch and other community based programs. I have secured equipment for search and rescue, an off road utility ATV and a new boat just to mention a few.

The Sheriff’s Office now has a Special Enforcement Bureau, which consists of specially trained Deputies in Search and Rescue, Special Weapons and Tactics, Hostage Negotiations and various other specialty fields. We have a mobile command post and equipment to assist other County Agencies in time of disaster or crisis. We continue to train and offer our Deputies the best available training so that they may provide the residents of Otsego County with the best possible services.

I look forward to our continued working relationship with other law enforcement agencies, county agencies and local agencies to accomplish our mission of keeping the residents of Otsego County safe and secure.

I hope you take a moment to view our web site and see what we have accomplished. We will continue to serve the residents of Otsego County to the best of our ability and I appreciate your continued support to this office.

Respectfully Yours

Richard J. Devlin, Jr.
